Toad's Trees
Welcome to Toad's Trees!
After Toad's appearance in the 1994 NES/SNES classic "Wario's Woods", he has more challenges to complete in this block-type puzzle game! See if you can push, pull and climb your way to the top of these unique levels!
Available for download and playing from browser. Please note that 3rd party cookies must be enabled to save your game.
Background
This SNES-imitation is a game built from the ground-up in Godot and features puzzles inspired by the Atlus puzzle game Catherine.
This idea originally came from an attempt to trick friends into believing in a long-lost SNES game that was never released overseas.
Going way too far for a joke, I present a puzzle game with 9 unique levels that introduce more mechanics as you progress. Toad's Trees has evolved to be completely different from its inspirations, and is a complete and challenging game in its own right.

Download
Install instructions
I recommend playing this game on the latest version of Windows 11.
Windows users
The download includes a zipped .exe and .pck that must be placed in the same directory to play. The executable may still be blocked by your firewall, which is a known problem for games with only a self-signed license. You must allow the program to run to play as I'm opting not to pay for a reviewed certificate.
macOS users
The download includes a zipped .ipa
Please note that there is only an adhoc license for MacOS that will be blocked by Gatekeeper. You must either allow this program as an exception or open it in a Windows virtual machine to play.
Other Users
The Linux version is untested. If you are a Linux user who plays this game, your feedback is appreciated. You may also attempt launching the Windows executable on Linux using Wine.
Save files are automatically made in the default Godot file paths and may be deleted from the game's main menu.
Windows: %APPDATA%\Godot\ macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Godot/ Linux: ~/.local/share/godot/
Reporting Bugs
I do not plan on updating this game outside major bugs. Older operating systems and lower-end graphical systems may encounter rare stutters which can cause blocks to lose collision. In all known instances, restarting from checkpoint should solve these minor issues. If major issues occur, please comment and I will look to resolve them ASAP.

Huge enjoyer of Catherine (certainly my favorite puzzle game I’ve played), so couldn’t pass up on playing this despite rarely ever playing fangames. Very fun and unique take on its mechanics, and think should be proud of it. My only real complaints (which I hope will be taken lightly) are that I too had some trouble with the controls, but likely due to conflicting muscle memory from Catherine. An auto-jump options toggle when making a directional input (or even perhaps like a double directional tap) toward a block 1 above you so that it works closer to Catherine think would have helped me, and the jump button would still have its own purpose (? Blocks/Bob-ombs). I also too found the shimmy controls a little confusing (especially in cases like when trying to make sense of whether you are standing on a block or hanging from a block in the background), but aren’t unworkable. A small nitpick was that blocks can fall a bit slow when spawning and can force small waits as otherwise you can beat them to the landing and, if do, can often result in unintentional deaths. Overall I enjoyed the puzzle design a lot and worth the play.
I'm thrilled whenever someone takes the time to try it out, and I appreciate the thought you put into the feedback! The shimmy controls do seem to be a sticking point, though the original Catherine controls where direction is relative to Vincent rather than the screen were giving some trouble in a 2D game. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to give more options in hopes that those who have and haven't played Catherine could find something comfortable for them. I'm planning on one final bug update + new costume before I put this down to work on future projects, but I'll keep it in mind! Hope you had fun!
Catherine Speedrunner here.
The game is quite fun, but i find the jumping mechanic to be a little iffy! It's hard to play fast since it seems to sometimes eat inputs.Other than that i also find the shimmy controls to be a bit confusing, but it's an overall solid game, pretty fun.
Hey, I appreciate the feedback from someone so familiar with Catherine! While I was adding in some sidling functions in 1.06, I've addressed the climbing a bit. Climbing might have felt slow since it doesn't accept inputs until a move is completely done. I've gotten rid of this buffer and allowed the player to just hold B + Dpad to climb and you're right, this feels much faster and nicer. (Ofc Catherine just used Dpad alone, and it was my choice to add a second button to make directional change easier). There's a lot going on trying to make it all 2D but I appreciate your checking it out and hope it's been fun!
thanks vinny
lovely little sequel to wario woods and (fuck i messed up) i wish i could (damnit i pushed the block wrong) play the whole thing but sadly (OGHHHHHHHH) i am not very good at catherine
Extremely minor nitpick but I find it incredibly funny you used the US color scheme for the controller graphics despite trying to pass this off as a Japanese exclusive.
Lol good point! Somehow I never thought about that even when I had a Japanese controller in front of me. Maybe I'll look at adjusting it next time I'm fixing bugs
